Stewardship Resources
You can help protect and restore the Winooski River Watershed by implementing some of the stewardship ideas listed below.
Knock the Snot Out of the Winooski River - Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention
Friends of the Winooski River has partnered with Friends of the Mad River and the Lake Champlain Basin Program to educate the public on preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species within the Winooski River Watershed. Didymo (aka 'rock snot') was discovered in the Mad River in July 2008 when it bloomed for several weeks creating a mat of thick stalks over a stretch of the river between Warren and Waitsfield. During 2009 summer Friends of the Winooski and Friends of the Mad River are hosting public education workshops and boat cleaning demos at locations throughout the watershed in an effort to prevent the spread of didymo to other parts of watershed. Landowner Assistance Stewardship Guide
A wealth of local, state and federal resources is available to help landowners protect the Winooski River and the tributaries flowing through their property. Until now it has been scattered across 20+ organizations. Friends of the Winooski partnered with Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District to create a Landowner Assistance Stewardship Guide that contains details about all the support programs available to landowners who may want to stablize the river bank, plant a riparian buffer or install a rain garden. The guide begins with a key that allows landowners to quickly find the type of project they are seeking assistance for. They can then flip to the detail page for that project in the back-half of the guide. Download the Winooski River Landowner Assistance Stewdship Guide.
