Vernal Pool Mapping: Looking to get outside this spring? Help map vernal pools with the Vermont Center for Ecostudies and Arrowwood Environmental this spring. Vernal pools provide vital habitat to amphibians such as frogs and salamanders but there is no information about where these pools are located to help protect them. This three year study is in its second year and will be focusing on Central Vermont. To learn how you can participate visit http://www.vtecostudies.org/VPMP

Riparian Planting

Cabot Riparian Planting May 5-8
Friends of the Winooski will be hosting a series of planting days May 5-8 in Cabot. Join VYCC on May 5-7 during the day to help with plantings or Cabot Community members on Saturday, May 8. Please let us know if you're coming so we can provide snacks by emailing fwr@sover.net or calling 802-655-4878.

Worcester Riparian Plantings Week of May 10th
Join Friends of the Winooski River as we plant trees along the North Branch in Worcester to help stabalize banks. Plantings will take place throughout the week of May 10th including one evening planting. Check back here for details.

Calais Riparian Planting Saturday, May 15 and Tuesday, May 4 (with National Life volunteers)
Join Friends of the Winooski River for a morning riparian planting project along the Kingsbury Branch in Calais. Or on Tuesday May 4th in the morning with National Life volunteers. We are also working on scheduling a day during the week of May 10th with elementary school students. Please email fwr@sover.net or call 802-655-4878 to sign-up.

Water Quality Monitoring:
The Friends and our partners in the Headwaters, the North and Stevens Branch as well as the mainstem around Montpelier will be conducting water quality monitoring this summer. We need volunteers to help collect water samples. The sampling will be done on scheduled dates (e.g. first and third Tuesdays of the month) but those dates have not yet been finalized. Sampling will start in mid June and run through early October. On any given sampling date, a volunteer could expect to spend an hour +/- collecting and delivering samples, depending on how many sites you are sampling. You do not need to be available on all of the sampling dates. It may also be possible to work with a partner if you are more comfortable with that. All training will be provided.
