Mission & History
The Friends of the Winooski River is a volunteer organization based in Central Vermont, whose mission is to reduce pollution in the rivers of the Winooski watershed, and promote wildlife habitat, scenic value, and recreational amenities. It was originally founded in 1992 by the River Network but has operated as an independent nonprofit since 1998. FWR is led by a small group of citizens including anglers and environmental professionals who are concerned about the deteriorating water quality in the Winooski River. A Program Director is responsible for day to day operations.

Over the years, the FWR has undertaken a variety of projects in support of this mission. . FWR is perhaps best known for the Celebrate the Winooski! Festival. This annual event increases public stewardship of the Winooski River and its tributaries through river cleanups, education and celebration. FWR has helped landowners - on the Huntington River in Richmond, on the North Branch in Worcester, in the Headwaters in Marshfield and Cabot and the Thatcher Brook in Waterbury- stabilize eroding stream banks and establish buffers. It has worked extensively with school groups and community-based organizations to develop and implement restoration and education projects. FWR is a partner with the Winooski River Natural Resources Conservation District and the Central Vermont Regional Planning Commission to conduct a geomorphic assessment on river stretches of the Upper Winooski from Montpelier to Cabot and on the North Branch. FWR has also worked with the cities of Montpelier and Barre to document and monitor stormwater outfalls for discharge problems.
