Paddling Ability
The Winooski River is not a difficult river to paddle. For the most part, the rapids are short and easily portaged. However, paddlers should have experience on moving water, not just lakes or ponds. Safety will be the number one priority on the Sojourn. Sojourn safety staff will make the final decision as to whether or not someone is capable of paddling a given stretch of river. The majority of the river is quite calm and slow moving. We will cover from 7 to 15 miles per day at a moderate pace. Please consult the Route Description page for details on each day of the trip.
The river is very narrow from Marshfield to East Montpelier (Tuesday June 19th). We are limiting the number of boats that day to 20 and all paddlers must have significant river paddling experience.
Please consult the river descriptions when selecting your days. You can also download our paddling guide.
Age
For most of the Sojourn, the minimum age for paddlers in a single boat is 15 and they must be accompanied on the Sojourn by an adult. Youth, ages 10 to 14, may paddle the Sojourn in a tandem boat with an experienced adult paddler.
Cancellation Policy
The Sojourn is a rain or shine event. If dangerous river conditions exist, alternative activities including paddling on ponds and reserviors may be substituted. All meals and camping will be provided
If you cancel by May 23rd, you will receive a full refund less a $25 handling fee. Between May 24th and June 10th, you will receive a 75% refund less $25 handling fee. There will be no refunds after June 10th except for medical or family emergencies.
Food
Three meals are included with the Sojourn for multi-day paddlers. Most dinners will be catered to camp or the program site by a local restaurant. Lunches will be a combination of take out from local restaurants or ala carte on the river. Breakfasts will be in camp and consist of juice, coffee, tea, fruit, granola, bagels etc. On a couple of days, we have a hot breakfast in camp. Generally speaking, vegetarians will be well served by the menus. We cannot accommodate other special diets.
Camping
You do not need to carry your camping gear in your boat. We will have a support vehicle (truck and trailer) to carrier your gear. Please pack as lightly as possible. Please pack your belongings in water proof bags or double wrap them in garbage bags. We will get you back to your car at the end of your journey. You will only need to carry what you need or want for the day with you.
The camp sites will vary with respect to amenities. Indoor restrooms or port-o-lets and potable water will be available at all sites. Showers will be available in Waterbury (June 22), and in Winooski (June 25) at local inns and health clubs. The establishment may charge a small fee.
Shuttle Info
If you are a single day or non-consecutive day paddler you must sign up for the shuttle service during registration. If you are a consecutive multi-day paddler, shuttle service is included for you and your boat back to your car.
